My Feelings On A Seperate Peace

Right off the bat I found this book to be way easier to get into than Huck Finn. I just felt like it was better written because I'm not into Mark Twain's style. At the very beginning of the book, it reminded me of James and myself, because they were best friends, they were really competitive, and they roughhoused all the time. And of course when it got to the point where Gene started hating Finny because he was so jealous i was a little disturbed that i compared myself to him, especially when he knocked Phineas out of the tree. Atleast Gene tried to confess to Finny, and then realising the negative effect, tried to keep it a secret for Finny.

I found that I loved the character Finny and I liked Leper but i just couldn't like or respect Gene. I started to forgive him when he was training for the olympics with Finny, and I hoped that would go somewhere, but much to my dismay, "Nothing endures, not a tree, not love, not even a death by violence."
All in all i thought it was a good book but it wasn't my favorite. What did all of you think of it?

  1. I really did not enjoy the book as much as I did Huck Finn. Overall it is a really good my favorite part of the book is when the author gives an definition of separate peace I felt like that just summed up the whole book for me.

  2. I think A Separate Peace is one of the better books I have ever read. It explores the truths of human nature and reality in general, which I find refreshing. I'd have to say this book was surprisingly good.

  3. A Separate Peace was definitely easy to read than Huck Finn for me. It held my attention much more and it had an intriguing way of describing things throughout the story. It was almost as though you were seeing everything through his eyes because of how random the descriptions are.

I also loved the character Finny. He was so carefree and yet a natural leader that seemed to have fun with anything he did. I hated how the story took the friendship between Finny and Gene but it was important to understad I believe.

  4. I agree with you and Pickle. I automatically seemed more into A Separate Peace compared to Huck Finn, but I would have to say it is not one of my favorites.

Finny was my favorite character as well. The friendship that Finny and Gene had, as John said, explored a lot of the truths of human nature, and I think that's why it was so interesting to me. Every emotion or thought was played out and that made things even clearer for me.

  5. I actually really enjoyed this book. I would have to honestly say it was one of the better books I read and enjoyed. It was neat to see how this friendship in this book really played out. It constantly reminded me of my best friend, and how I hope some of this stuff never happens. I know that I have caught myself being jealous towards my best friend, but at the same time I have to remind myself that he is jealous towards me. This is what makes a friendship though. This constant jealousy makes you want to do better than your friend, both in school and in sports. This makes a better student, as was as an athlete.

  6. As everyone else has said, I really have enjoyed reading this book. It was much easier to read then Huck Finn, and I might consider it to be one of the better books that I have read.

Finny was my favorite character in the book I would have to say. I've talked to other people about him, and we've decided it's so hard not to enjoy reading about him. I loved when Finny said to Gene that if he couldn't play sports, he was going to for him. This just proved Finny's character was pure, and he was so positive, that's what attracted everyone in and reading the novel to him.

As far as Garrett said, I agree to an extent about the jealousy issue. I can't say that I have experienced this with a friend, but it's great to have a friend or someone in your life that's willing to push you. At the time, it might make you frustrated and upset, but it's worth it. As you said Garrett, that makes a better student, as well an athlete, or musician, whatever you may be involved in.

  7. A Separate Peace was definitley much better than Huck Finn. I found myself lost in this book and less distracted. Mark Twain's style of writing bored me because there was way too much decription.
My favorite character would have to be Gene because I think I can relate to him more. I'm more of an academic student than an athlete. I don't follow the rules of school all the time, though. As Jill said about having a great friend who pushes you, I have a friend who pushes me to not worry about my academics all the time and to actually have fun. I have found myself jealous of somebody, but I think it's just because I find myself wishing I was more than an academic student and a band geek. However, I've come to realize that is what defines me, and now I'm at least okay with it.

  8. Twas a good read. The metaphors and similies towards the beginning reminded me a lot of a Mitch Albom book a finished not too long ago. I really like when an author can take a bizarre approach to describe something to the reader. It is so very creative and helps me look at everything in this wonderous world differently.

I wasn't really fond of Finny's character. He seemed a bit hot headed and had to make everything his way but I get to be biased on the narrator's side in books.

  9. I can agree with liking the book, but I'd have to disagree with not liking Gene. I liked him because I easily understood his point of view. Sure, causing your athletic best friend to fall out of a tree and break his leg seems bad. But, it was a heat of the moment situation and he had built up anger towards Finny. We are all aware that Gene felt horrible afterward, and wanted to tell Finny the truth, as well as attempted to tell him the truth.
I can relate to Gene because he had this feeling that he'd never be forgiven. Almost to a point of rejection. After Finny broke his leg again and a day before Dr. Stanpole broke the news to Gene, Finny and Gene made amends. Then Finny died. If I were Gene, something wouldn't feel complete for me and Finny's tragic death would leave a friendship hanging. I guess I somewhat pity Gene.

  10. This book was so much better then Huck Finn. I agree with John, "It explores the truths of human nature and reality in general, which I find refreshing." I feel that the friendship in this book can describe a few that we've all had in the past. I think it's safe to say that at one point we've all envied another friend for something they could do or had. The book might have taken it to the extreme but it was easy to connect too. I also agree with Haley, I liked Gene. Not a lot of books have a character like him. I can see parts of myself in both Gene and Finny. I give this book two thumbs up!
