8. Tell about Huck's time at the Wilks Plantation. Include Huck's talk with Joanna, Huck's feelings for Mary Jane, and how the King got out of his predicament when two other "brothers" arrive.
Huck was with the Duke and the King in a money swindling scam to get the money left behind by a man who recently passed away. He grew to admire and care for Mary Jane, one of the 3 daughters whom they were swindling, and he began to feel really sick about the whole opperation. Mary Jane had stuck up for him when he was being interogated by Joanna, the "hair lip," who tricked him several times into giving away that he was lying and he had to just keep laying it on thicker to cover his tracks. He was in too deep to just say I'm done and throw in the towel, but he couldn't let his partners get away with it either so he devised a plan to steal and hide the money from them and write a letter to Mary Jane later on explaining where the money was and everything that had happened. Due to some complications, he had to revise the plan and hoped to get rid of the scallywags and help out the girls at the same time, but more problems arose. The real Brothers from England that the King and the Duke had been pretending to be, actually arrived and trouble was afoot. A friend of the family set up a community trial to decide who was real and who was phony. When asked about a tattoo on the chest of the late Peter Wilks, the King made up a random shape that happened to be an arrow. When they dug up the body to inspect the tattoo and see if he was a liar, they found the money that Huck had hidden and in all the hubbub, everyone got away. Huck thought that Mary Jane was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen and that she had more grit than any he'd ever met and you might say he fell in love with her but they had to go their seperate ways.
Huck's time at the Wilks Plantation was not an enjoyable one. A certain talk with Joanna led him to act nervous when she questioned him about England. Huck messed up a couple things but Mary Jane & Susan insisted Joanna to apologize because an interrogation was not necessary. Huck felt horrible about the King and the Duke acting as the two brothers and wanted out of the whole situation. Huck didn't end up telling anyone until he saw Mary Jane crying and upset because of the matter. He felt bad to see her so upset. He trusted her enough to tell her the truth and to give him enough time to flee town. When the real brothers arrived they were questioned with the Duke and the King. The four of them were forced to sign a piece of paper to compare the signatures to the letter sent from England. Harvey was able to sign and was matched correctly but William couldn't due to his broken arm, one of the reasons for there late arrival. The Duke is not completely wrong yet so he continues to press on. Harvey said he knew of a tattoo on is brother's chest. But when they reviewed the body, no tattoo was found. The King and the Duke had time to flee town before being prosecuted yet again.
Huck, Jim, the king, and the duke arrived at the Wilks Plantation with the idea to rob 3 sisters who were about to inherit from their recently deceased Uncle Peter. Huck and his party were informed that Peter's 2 brothers from England were to come to the funeral, so king and duke pretended to be those 2 brothers, in order to swindle the family out of thousands of dollars. One night after having supper, Huck was talking with Joanna about "his time in England". She had him talking in circles, and he got his story mixed up several times. Somehow he managed to straighten out some parts so that it was believable to the 14-year old girl. Joanna's older sister, Mary Jane, then came in with Susan and reprimanded Joanna for making Huck "remember he ain't in his own country and amongst his own folks." Now, Huck thinks that Mary Jane is quite the woman: beautiful, compassionate, kind, etc. She was crying one day because a family of blacks were split up to go to different masters, so Huck told her that they would be back soon, just to reassure her. He then had to explain how he knew that, and in doing so, he told her about the plot to steal from her (of which he became against). So, he told her to go to a neighbors house so that he could fix the problem and then get away. After Peter's 2 real brothers showed up, there was a confrontation about who was telling the truth. So, king had the idea to have those claiming to be Harvey and William to write out a sentence and compare it to the letters that Peter received from his brothers while they were abroad. But, since William broke his right arm (the writing arm) Harvey had to write, and it didn't match up with the letters. But neither did the king's handwriting. So, Harvey asked who buried Peter. He then asked what tattoo was on Peter's chest. King said a small, hard-to-see arrow, while Harvey claimed it to be the letters PBW. Since the 2 who buried Peter couldn't remember, everyone went to dig up Peter's coffin and see what was there. In the meantime, Huck, king, and duke made their escape to the raft.
